On Sunday, August 16th, at the 68th Annual George Washington Letter Reading Teny Gross, who was born in Israel and moved to the states after his Army service, and currently resides with his family in Rhode Island, received the coveted Judge Alexander George Teitz Award. It is given annually to an individual or institution that best exemplifies the contemporary commitment to the ideals of religious and ethnic tolerance and freedom, expressed in President George Washington's 1790 Letter to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island. At the award ceremony, Andrew Teitz from the Touro Synagogue Foundation talked about Teny's remarkable work done as Executive Director of the Institute for Study and Practice of Non - Violence whose charter is "to teach, by word and example, the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. We work to build Dr. King’s ideal of the nonviolent Beloved Community".
The event was attended by Rhode Island Senate President Teresa Paiva - Reed, Senator Jack Reed, Congressman David Cicilline, General Treasurer Seth Magaziner, Mayor of Newport Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, Rabbi Dr. Marc Mandel and many other dignitaries and friends.
